Slot volatility: how a game spends your deposit

Two slots with the same RTP can treat a CA$100 deposit completely differently. One pays something on every other spin and rarely much; the other pays nothing for a hundred spins and then, occasionally, a lot. That difference is volatility, and it decides how long your money lasts.

Slot volatility describes how a slot distributes its return. RTP says how much comes back over the long run; volatility says how lumpy the way back is. A low-volatility slot returns its 96% as a steady trickle of small wins. A high-volatility slot returns the same 96% mostly through rare large wins, with long dry runs between them.

The figures below come from the providers' own game pages and the game data their demos load.

  • Hit rate is the share of spins that return anything. Sweet Bonanza pays on half of all spins; Big Bass Bonanza on about one in eight. Many hits are smaller than the stake.
  • Maximum win shows how far the top of the distribution reaches. To pay out a 300,000x win now and then and still return 96%, a game has to pay less the rest of the time.
  • The provider's label is a summary, but each studio uses its own scale.

Reading the labels

StudioScale it uses
Pragmatic Playlow, medium, high
Nolimit Citylow to high, then extreme and insane
Hacksaw Gaming1 to 5
ELK Studios1 to 10

An ELK game at 8 of 10 and a Nolimit City game at "extreme" are both high on their own scales, but the scales are not the same. Compare maximum wins across studios rather than labels.

Sizing a deposit to volatility

Our rule of thumb, not a guarantee: plan for at least 200 spins on a low-volatility game, 300 on a medium one and 500 or more on a high or extreme one, if you want a reasonable chance of seeing the bonus round. At a CA$1 stake that is CA$200, CA$300 and CA$500. On a smaller deposit, lower the stake rather than switching to a wilder game.

A CA$100 deposit at CA$2 a spin gives 50 spins. On Big Bass Bonanza, with its one-in-eight hit rate, it is quite possible to finish those 50 spins without the feature.

Volatility and bonuses

High-volatility slots and wagering requirements fight each other. A bonus asks you to stake many times its value at a capped bet, 5 EUR or USD at Hellspin (bonus terms 1e); a high-volatility game is likely to empty the balance before the wagering is done. If you take a bonus, a medium-volatility, high-RTP slot gives the wagering the best chance to finish. See wagering requirements.

Where to find the figures

Every slot shows its RTP and, at most studios, its volatility in the info screen. For the highest returns, see high-RTP slots; for the feature-heavy end of the scale, bonus buy slots. Our main page ranks the Canadian Interac casinos we checked.

Questions and answers

What is slot volatility?

How widely a slot's results scatter around its RTP. Low-volatility slots pay small wins often; high-volatility slots pay rarely but can pay very large amounts. The RTP can be identical.

How do I tell a slot's volatility?

From the provider's label in the info screen, the hit rate where it is published, and the maximum win: a game capped at 2,000x behaves very differently from one capped at 100,000x.

Which volatility is best for a small deposit?

Low or medium. A small deposit on an extreme-volatility game often ends before the feature arrives. High volatility suits a bankroll of many hundreds of spins or a deliberate short, high-risk session.
