Hold and win slots, also sold as hold and spin, link and win or cash collect, share one feature: prize symbols lock on the reels and you get three respins to land more. Each new symbol resets the counter to three. When the counter runs out, everything on the board is paid. Filling the whole board usually awards the top fixed jackpot.
Hellspin's lobby had a hold-and-win category of 291 games when we counted on 9 October 2026.

How the feature pays

- Trigger. A set number of prize symbols, often six, lands in one spin.
- Lock. Those symbols stay; the rest of the board clears.
- Respins. Three spins in which only prize symbols can land. Each new one locks and resets the count to three.
- Collect. When three respins pass without a new symbol, the board is totalled. Jackpot symbols pay their fixed value; a full board often pays the Grand.
Two families of games use the mechanic in different ways. Coin-value games put cash values on each symbol and add them up. Collector games, such as Relax Gaming's Money Train series, add special symbols that collect, multiply or spread the values around the board, which creates the very large wins those games are known for: Money Train 3 lists a maximum of 100,000 times the stake.
What it does to volatility
The feature concentrates the game's return into an event that arrives rarely. Between triggers, many hold and win games pay little in the base game. A session that does not reach the feature loses steadily; one that does can recover several sessions at once. That is high volatility by design, whatever the label in the info screen says.
Our arithmetic for a bankroll: if a game triggers its feature on average once every 150 spins, a CA$1 stake needs a bankroll well above CA$150 to see the feature reliably, because "on average" includes long droughts. Our rule of thumb: budget for three to four times the average trigger interval.
Buying the feature
Many hold and win titles sell their feature. White Rabbit 2 from Big Time Gaming offers its hold and spin for 35x the stake and its free spins for 100x. Money Train 3 offers a bonus buy at 100x and a persistent bonus at 500x. Buying the feature does not improve the return; see bonus buy slots for the arithmetic.

Bonus rules
If you play with a welcome bonus, two rules matter. The bet cap: Hellspin limits bets to 5 EUR or USD while a bonus runs and counts bought features and respins as bets (1e, 3j). And excluded titles: games with jackpot symbols may fall under the jackpot exclusion in the bonus terms (2b). Check the excluded list before you play a hold and win game on bonus money.
Where to play
Hellspin's hold-and-win category is the largest we counted, and its terms pay progressive jackpot wins in full. Slotsgem runs accounts in Canadian dollars and carries Relax Gaming. More on jackpot slots and slot volatility; which casinos take e-Transfer both ways is on our Interac casino list.
Questions and answers
- What is a hold and win slot?
A slot with a respin feature: when six or so prize symbols land, they lock in place and you get three respins. Each new prize symbol locks and resets the respins to three. When the respins run out, the values on the board are added up and paid.
- Are hold and win jackpots progressive?
Usually not. Most hold and win games carry fixed jackpots, named Mini, Minor, Major and Grand, worth set multiples of the stake. The game's paytable lists them.
- Can I buy the hold and win feature?
In many games, yes. White Rabbit 2 from Big Time Gaming sells its hold and spin feature for 35 times the stake. While a casino bonus is active, a buy counts as a bet under the bonus bet cap at Hellspin (bonus terms 1e, 3j).
